It all began in Bridgeport, CT almost a century ago when Henry C. Reid, a watch and clock maker, opened the store in 1910 on Broad Street. When Herb Reid, the son of Henry C. Reid, retired, his partner Arthur R. French Jr. took on three new partners, all of whom had been in his employ. Harry French bought out his father’s partners in 1978 and today the certified gemologist remains the sole owner and company president of Henry C. Reid & Son Jewelers..Not only has French followed in his father’s footsteps, but in those of Herb Reid. Reid was among the first jewelers in country to become a certified gemologist by the American Gemological Society.

Serving Westport & Fairfield, CT

Under the management of the Reids and Arthur French, the fine jewelry and gift store flourished for decades. In 1975 a second store was opened in Fairfield’s Heritage Square. Several years later the Bridgeport store was closed and the entire business was moved to the Fairfield location. But shortly thereafter they left Heritage Square for a place on the Post Road. The business remained there for almost 20 years before moving to its present location at 1591 Post Road, just six doors away. And with the move, Henry C. Reid & Son Jewelers started a new chapter in its illustrious history.

Meet Harry

Although most who know Harry think he’s been a jeweler his entire life, they are wrong. Harry’s very first job was in his  teenage years as a caddy at the Fairfield Country Club. Born and raised right here in Fairfield, Harry attended Tomlinson Middle School and Roger Ludlow High School. Even as a child, Harry always had an eye for the classics and the fabled 1928 Larry’s Diner of Fairfield was one of his favorite after-school treats. Although Larry’s Diner was lost long ago in a poker game, Harry has remained in his life-long community where today he and his wife Gloria have two children in the Fairfield schools and a small boat in Southport Harbor. Harry remains active in his Fairfield  and store and is a long standing member of the Rotary Club. Many of Harry’s long-standing friends have become customers, and most of Harry’s long-standing   customers have become friends, and that’s just the way he likes it.

Meet Greg

Greg, the son of Harry French, grew up in Fairfield just like his Dad and, just like his Dad, he never left. As a boy, Greg used to love seeing new movies at the Fairfield Community Theatre and in fact he still remembers waiting in line for hours to see ET when it first came out. Greg loved to play ice hockey at Gould manor pond and at Lake Hills, and when he caught his first striped bass in Southport harbor in 1982 he became hooked on fishing for life. Today, Greg and his wife Erin have a young daughter in the Fairfield school system and they are both heavily involved in Operation Hope, a non profit that provides both economic education and access to capital to low- and middle- income families. Together, Greg and his father oversee the Fairfield store, and they each remain active behind the counters ready to greet old friends and new customers who come for a visit.
